Canada Post has received strike notices from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) for both the urban and Rural/Suburban Mail Carrier (RSMC) bargaining units. These notices signal potential strike action, which could begin at 12:01 a.m. (Eastern Time) on Friday, November 15, unless an agreement is reached by then.
While Canada Post's operations remain unaffected for now, CUPW members have issued a "72-hour strike notice," legally permitting them to strike if no settlement is reached. The National Executive Board has not yet decided whether job action will occur immediately, depending on progress in negotiations.
After nearly a year of bargaining, several key issues remain unresolved. These include wage increases in line with inflation, the complete elimination of sick leave, improvements to staffing levels, route management, and enhanced benefits.
CUPW also pushes for paid meal and rest periods, protections against technological changes and harassment, and expanded postal services, including postal banking and senior check-ins.
Earlier this month, the town of Carstairs warned residents of potential mail service disruptions due to ongoing negotiations.
