Neighbouring towns join Airdrie with full slate of Canada Day events

While Airdrie gears up for a citywide celebration, nearby towns including Carstairs, Didsbury, and Olds are also hosting packed slates of parades, vendors, fireworks, and free food on July 1.

Chinook’s Edge wraps up school year with key updates

In their last trustee meeting for the school year, the Chinook's Edge School Division Board of Trustees made a number of decisions and wished the graduating class the best of luck last week.

The Chinook’s Edge Board of Trustees wishes to extend its congratulations to the graduating class of 2025. The Board echoed the comments of Superintendent Ryan Sawula, given in his Superintendent’s report at the meeting explained the school division.

Chinook’s Edge salutes longtime leader Shawn Russell

Chinook’s Edge School Division celebrates Associate Superintendent Shawn Russell ahead of retirement.

Russell’s career as a teacher began 33 years ago in the Northwest Territories and has included roles in four school divisions.

"He has been a teacher, vice principal, principal, and associate superintendent. Russell arrived in Chinook’s Edge in 2001 and moved into a leadership role in the division office in 2006. He is currently serving as Associate Superintendent of Corporate Services," shared Chinook's Edge

Update: Reports of vehicle fire near Carstairs; traffic may be impacted

A vehicle fire temporarily slowed traffic on the QEII southbound near the Carstairs overpass Thursday afternoon.

A truck and trailer caught fire on the right-hand side of the highway, according to one account. Although 511 Alberta did not report the incident, Google traffic showed delays in the area at the time.

The scene has since been cleared.

Heavy rainfall could bring up to 80 mm by Saturday evening

Flash flood risk prompts a warning for low-lying areas and roads. 

A significant rainfall event is expected to develop across parts of Alberta, with 40 to 80 millimetres possible by Saturday evening.

Environment Canada warns that heavy downpours can cause flash floods and pooling water on roads. Low-lying areas are particularly at risk of localized flooding. Airdrie drivers are urged to be cautious: reduce speed in poor visibility, turn on headlights, and watch for washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts.

Students recognized for dual credit course completion

Central Alberta Collegiate Institute celebrated 31 high school students for completing the dual credit post-secondary course.

"Olds College of Agriculture & Technology’s Werklund School of Agriculture was filled with proud families and smiling graduates on Friday, June 13," shared Chinook's Edge.

The graduates are high school students who have completed post-secondary training, earning both college and high school credits. The Central Alberta Collegiate Institute (CACI) offered pre-employment programs in welding and heavy equipment technician (HET).

Thinking of cooling off outside Airdrie? Better do it fast

With daytime highs expected to reach 29 C by Thursday, spray park access may be in high demand. In Airdrie, the taps are already flowing. Chinook Winds Spray Park opened for the season last Friday, offering 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. access seven days a week. It remains one of just two spray parks currently operating near Airdrie.
