While a number of southwest Saskatchewan municipalities are holding elections today, Neville's mayor has returned to her seat by acclamation.
Nora McLearn has been on council for eight years and first took the mayor's chair six years ago.
"Actually, feels pretty good because we worked really hard over this last turn to change a few things around and bring it back into a more of a community feel," McLearn said. "We're pretty community minded and we have a really nice community. It's small, but we all try to work together, and we just wanted to keep that going. I wanted to be a little bit more involved in some of the decision making that was going on."
McLearn focused on a few things over her time as mayor so far.
"We needed to build up our fire department," she noted. "So we were working on that and just community relations. The community seemed to be drifting apart a little bit because it was always the same thing and nothing new and we wanted to bring some fresh ideas to the table. We've managed to do that.
"We were the first all-female council when I got on as a councillor years ago."
McLearn also took on the role as fire chief presiding over a staff of 18 during her term as mayor.
"We are getting there," she said. "We've managed to do a fair bit of fundraising, so a couple of years ago we were responding to a fire, and we did write off one of our fire trucks. We did some fundraising to replace it and were quite successful with that. With the extra money, we've been able to replace some of our gear because it's aging out as well. We're upgrading some of our equipment and you're always fundraising when it comes to the fire department because there are no grants available for the fire department through the government or anything."
There are some pretty big projects on the horizon in Neville.
"Our sewer is aging out and for our roads and both of them are quite expensive to replace," McLearn said. "Sewers are oh my goodness, 60 years old and the surface of our roads gets pounded from just daily use. So figuring out how we're going to either resurface it or have to go back to gravel whatever is more cost effective."
McLearn was also recently honoured for her bravery in helping stop an attack on a woman in Swift Current.
There is a council election in Neville and you can vote at the village office until 8pm.
We will update all local election results as we get them on Swift Current Online.
