With Estevan's civic election unofficial results in, a few new faces are ready to help Estevan through its city council.
That includes Tom Mauss, who was voted into office with an unofficial vote count of 1233 votes, the fifth highest of all the nominees.
Mauss says he's thrilled with the result.
"I'm very pleased and really happy that that worked out. I'm glad the citizens have decided to trust me. I'm looking forward to it, I'm really looking forward to a new game, something I've never done before."
With a swearing-in ceremony in the coming days and his first council meeting over a week away, Mauss is getting ready to learn a lot about the city.
"The first thing I guess is I have to get up to speed. I have to inform myself about what's been going on. I did that during the campaigning as well, sort of walked around to businesses and talked to the fire department and the Police Department to see how things run and see how things going, how things are going. Because our first order of business, or one of the first big orders of business obviously will be the budget."
Another vote which took place was a plebiscite on a new ice surface in Estevan. Mauss says they'll keep an eye on the issue after such a close vote.
"I think it was pretty tight, but I think people believe we don't need more ice. I don't know about that. If we're going to look at that in Council or not, I have no idea. Maybe we'll still look at it, I don't know. There's been a lot of talk about that in the past anyway and we'll see what happens. We'll take it as it comes."
Mauss says he's looking forward to working with the group he's been elected with, who'll bring a wide variety of experiences.
"It's going to be a good group. I have a really good feeling about the people. I mean Shelly Veroba and Kirsten Walliser, they've got experience. Brian has past experience on council, he's been with council for a number of terms."
"I think we're a really good combination and I like Mathew, he's a young guy and that'll give a fresh view of things. I'm kind of the old man on the crew, but I think it's a good group. I think it's a really good group and I'm really looking forward to working together with them."
With the first council meeting of the new group taking place on the 25th, Mauss says he'll be ready to bring his A-game.
"Like I said, I'm a newbie. I'm a little nervous, but I'm really looking forward to it to see how that works and see what we get done. The budget is happening right away. There are other things we have to look at, what's going to happen with downtown, when that's going to be finished, etcetera, etcetera."
"There are some projects there that still have to be looked at, but I'm looking forward to it. Like I said, in the meantime have to get up to speed, talk to (City Manager Jeff Ward), you know, both the budget and just get up to speed on what's going on within town.
Mauss gave his thanks to Judy Pilloud and the City of Estevan team that made the election run as smoothly as possible.
