The RM of Swift Current is under new leadership with Ramona Dyck.
She plans to acclimate to the job, learning the necessary skills and taking in the required knowledge to do the job. Her main concerns are upkeeping roads, cultivating a good relationship between the City and the RM, and listening to the many concerns people have.
"It's really complicated with all of the varied people and businesses and neighbourhoods that are represented in (the RM)," said Dyck.
With 242 votes, Dyck beat Richard Keller by 29 votes. The narrow margin for victory has her determined to earn the trust of the voters who put her in power.
"Obviously one of the other candidates had a significant amount of experience in the council," said Dyck. "I plan to do the hard work, to familiarize myself with my mandates and my specific responsibilities as a Reeve.
"I need some time to do that and it's a great team behind me, so I look forward to working with and learning from the existing members already there."
Dyck is not only the first woman to serve as Reeve in the RM of Swift Current, but the first woman to ever sit on the RM council.
"I come from a family where my mom was very much a groundbreaker in her career," said Dyck. "I also simply take it with a grain of salt. Women are capable of doing this job, and I respect that people have decided to give me that opportunity."
Dyck's mother, Emily Rempel, began as a secretary with the Swift Current College, worked her way up to secretary-treasurer, and went on to become the CEO and Principal of the college. She is also a very active Kiwanis Club member.
