The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has ruled that a Ponoka RCMP officer's use of force was justified in an officer-involved shooting causing injury in February of 2022.

On February 10, 2022, a man was walking through downtown Ponoka carrying a paintball gun that resembled a real handgun and attempted to get inside the Provincial Building.

One of the officers fired his carbine rifle at the suspect after the suspect pointed the gun at police.

The suspect was struck approximately four times.

EMS arrived and attended to the man.

He was airlifted to hospital and was treated for gunshot wounds. The man survived.

ASIRT says there are not reasonable grounds to believe that the officer committed a criminal offence.
