The Swift Current Fire Department is encouraging safety and caution now that the snow has arrived.
Marlene Funk, administrative assistant for the Swift Current Fire Department and emergency management coordinator for the City of Swift Current, wants to remind people that even though it's only snow, there are a few things to keep in mind.
Firstly, Funk encouraged people to check the forecast before they head out.
"It's about being aware of your surroundings," said Funk. "If the weather says that it's going to be snowing and blowing snow, maybe stay home."
The next thing to keep in mind according to Funk is dressing in layers. Stacking a shirt, a sweater, and a coat creates multiple insulated layers of air that help retain body heat.
"Putting on the extra mittens and toques, and covering up your ears and those small bits that like to stick out from under your clothes," said Funk. "If you're feeling cold, certainly, go inside and warm up."
Anyone who is out shovelling snow is encouraged by the Fire Department to take breaks as needed. Once finished, Funk prescribes hot chocolate to help heat back up.
