As winter continues to grip the southeast, the Estevan Police Service has been called to several collisions, prompting a safety reminder from Deputy Chief Warren Morrical about the importance of winter driving preparation.

"First and foremost, we ask people to prepare their vehicles for winter driving. Ensure you have winter or all-season tires that are properly inflated, check the fluids, and make sure your vehicle is in good operating condition, said Morrical. "Also, confirm that your windshield washer fluid is rated for winter temperatures and that your windshield defrosters are functioning so you can see out of your vehicle."

He added that it’s important for drivers to remove snow from their vehicles to improve visibility and reduce the risk of blowing snow or ice that may come loose and impact other drivers.

"The most important thing is to adjust your driving habits to the road conditions. Slow down, increase your following distance, and avoid sudden movements."

With many highways across the province closed due to winter conditions, Morrical recommends not travelling unless necessary. "If you do find yourself on the highway during these conditions, make sure you are prepared. Have food and water in your vehicle, along with warm clothing and the ability to stay warm," he said.

"Make sure your vehicle is fully fueled and capable of running for long periods in case you get stuck on the side of the road."
