Snow and strong winds that have been affecting much of the province are expected to taper off later today, with cooler temperatures settling in as winter takes hold across the southeast.
"So, that low-pressure system that's been impacting most of the province is pulling off. We are expecting the snow and the winds to taper off later this morning into this afternoon. It will be much cooler than it has been over the previous few months, but winter is settling in," said Danielle Dejardins, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada.
She noted that the snow and winds will die down today.
"The windchill will die down, just because the windchill is based on the wind speed and the temperature. So, because we are expecting winds to die down, the windchill won’t be quite as low as the –20 to mid-20 range," said Dejardins.
She added that the temperatures won’t necessarily be warm. "We’re looking at temperatures below normal for this time of year, with highs in the –8 to –10 degree range and lows in the minus teens."
While a break from winter midweek will be welcome, another system is expected to make its way to the southeast this weekend. However, there is some uncertainty around the timing.
"So, in terms of amounts, depending on where you are, you could see about 5 to 10 centimetres this week. But it’s not going to be accompanied by the strong winds that this past system had."
She noted that further information on the system will be narrowed down over the next couple of days.
