The Estevan Community Hamper and Angel Tree programs are preparing to bring holiday joy to families in need, with a crucial deadline of December 1 for applications.

Jolie Bayda, a representative for the programs, said the initiatives aim to ensure no child or family is left behind during the festive season, providing toys, gifts, and meals to those who need them most.

“Every year, we try and collect brand-new presents for all the kids in town whose families might not be able to afford them or are having a tough month,” Bayda said.

Families can apply for assistance directly through the programs or the Salvation Army.

The Community Hamper program supplies food for families to enjoy a Christmas meal. “Normally, we do a turkey and all the fixings for Christmas Day, like breakfast and lunch,” Bayda said. This year, some adjustments are being made, but traditional items such as turkey, Christmas oranges, and chocolates remain part of the package.

The Angel Tree program provides each child with a main gift, a stocking stuffer, and a pair of pyjamas. “If you’ve seen the blue and pink angels on the Christmas trees around town, that’s us,” Bayda said. Last year, more than 400 children aged 16 and under benefited from the program.

Donations of new toys are welcome, with gifts for older children especially in demand. “Even if you have a million dollars, it’s hard to shop for teenagers,” Bayda said. To address this, the program works with local schools to gather suggestions for age-appropriate gifts, though gift cards are avoided to ensure each child receives a tangible present.

Several community events are planned to support the initiatives. The Estevan Firefighters will host a toy drive at Canadian Tire on December 7, while the Estevan Police Service is organizing its “Pack the Cruiser” event with local elementary schools. “It’s a fun one where the kids get to put the presents in themselves,” Bayda said.

The December 1 deadline for applications is firm, but Bayda said the programs are flexible with their criteria. “Nothing’s black and white, right? Their house could have gone on fire; there’s just so many different situations where it’s kind of tough to lay a hard line,” she said.

Organizers are determined to make sure every child experiences the magic of the holidays with a special gift to brighten their season. If you have any questions regarding these initiatives or to arrange a donation you can contact them by phone at 306-471-7181 or through their Facebook page.
