In the first Swift Current city council meeting of the year, the Swift Current SPCA had some great news delivered.

City council gave notice of motion to the public if it intends to consider a change to the existing discretionary use at 2101 Knight Crescent, due to the proposed new humane animal facility.

The SPCA has submitted its plans for the long-discussed facility renovation. The new facility would be 10,000 square feet, with a 1,200 square foot crematorium. The facility would include a boarding service for animals, an in-house veterinary clinic, staff offices, and multiple storage areas.

Swift Current Mayor, Al Bridal, was a volunteer who helped to construct the current SPCA, back in 1989/1990.

"It was a long time ago, and I was a young man then too," laughed Bridal.

The proposed development will need to undergo scrutiny from the Planning Division. Additional procedures for public consultation will be taking place.

Anyone who owns property within a 75-metre radius of the project will be informed, with a notice on the City website.

A public hearing regarding the proposed changes will be held on January 6, during the regular city council meeting. That is also when city council may make the decision if needed.

Swift Current city councillor, Ryan Switzer, was thrilled to see this matter moving through the proper process.

"This is really exciting and I just want to take this opportunity to commend the volunteers at the SPCA who for years have done the best they could with what they have in their previous facility," said Switzer. "I'm very excited to move this process along to the next step of what's hopefully going to be a successful construction."
