The Saskatchewan government is looking at their new term with the legislative session beginning yesterday with a throne speech.
That laid out some of their top priorities, ranging from healthcare, education, and more.
Lori Carr, Estevan's MLA and the deputy house leader, talks about what their priorities will be for the next four years.
"What it does is it sets off the path for the next four years for our government and what we're going to focus on is trying to ensure that every individual has a primary healthcare provider. We're trying to ensure timely access to surgeries within the province as well as people having access to those mental health and addiction recovery supports when they are needed and of course, we want all people to feel safe in the community where they live."
Education was also a strong point for the government with a focus on increasing student outcomes and support.
"Education is really important. We're going to focus on those reading levels for students in grades one to three because we all know that up to grade three students are learning to read and then after that, they read to learn. So if they have a strong base in those one to three years they will be set up for success and that's what we're going to focus on."
The current legislative session will be just two weeks long, with Carr stating that will give them enough time to expand on their throne speech plans.
"For the next two weeks, what we do is we address the throne speech. So the items that were brought up in this throne speech, we'll have an opportunity to speak to those items and what that might mean and I guess the commitment that we're going to be making to the people of Saskatchewan."
Carr says that she's looking forward to the upcoming term with plenty of work to be done.
"I'm really excited. Obviously during the election, the voters voted us to be the party to lead the province into the future, but they also sent us a clear message that there does need to be some sort of change happening and this government is going to focus on healthcare, education and safe communities."
