The Santa Cause program is gearing up for another season of giving, providing gifts and support to local families in need during the Christmas season. According to Allie Connelly, a member of the Santa Claus Committee, the organization relies on donations to help ensure every child in the community has a gift to unwrap this holiday season.

"Santa Cause is our local organization that provides gifts for families in need during Christmas. We rely on generous donations to keep the committee running and bring joy to our community," Connelly explained.

The initiative, which began in the 1980s, was originally started by the Saint Andrews United Church Women. Over time, it has grown with more community involvement, especially from local volunteers like Connelly. "It’s really become more of a community effort now, with many of us helping out and organizing the program," she added.

Santa Cause services families from a wide range of communities, including Gainsborough, Carievale, Glen Ewen, Oxbow, and Redvers. Families can sign up for the program through local schools, who nominate children based on need, or via the Santa Cause website, where parents can nominate their children or sign them up directly.

“We’ve had kids from just two months old to 17 years old sign up,” Connelly shared. “There’s really a broad range of needs, so we make sure to provide something for everyone—whether it's toys, clothes, or other gifts.”

The organization’s donations come in many forms. Connelly mentioned that an Amazon wish list is available for those who prefer to shop online, but there are also opportunities for in-person donations. "We also have our annual ‘Fill the Fire Truck’ event on December 14th, where people can donate toys in person," she said. "It’s a great way to support local families and give back during the holidays." This event will be part of the Santa Claus parade.

Another event that will support Santa Cause is the Teddy Bear Toss at the Red Devils game which will take place on December 14th. During the game, attendees are encouraged to bring teddy bears to toss onto the ice. "All the teddy bears go to Santa Cause and get distributed to the children in the program. Any extras will go to local hospitals for kids who might be in need during the holiday season," Connelly said.

Physical drop-off locations will be available at the Carnduff Affinity Credit Union from December 2nd to 13th for those looking to donate. Donors can also contribute by bringing items directly to any committee members or making cash donations through E-transfer.

The program has already seen a great response this year, with 49 children signed up. "We’ve already had a wonderful turnout, and we’re hoping for even more support as the holiday season gets closer," Connelly noted.

Whether by donating toys, clothes, or cash, or by participating in events like Fill the Fire Truck and the Teddy Bear Toss, there are plenty of ways for the community to get involved with Santa Cause. The organization continues to thrive thanks to the generosity of local residents who are dedicated to making the holidays brighter for families in need.

For more information on how to nominate a family, donate, or participate in upcoming events, visit the Santa Cause website or reach out to a committee member.

"We're just so thankful for the support we get every year. It really makes a difference for families in our community," Connelly concluded.
