Winter is still ongoing in the southeast though it'd be easy to be mistaken with some of the weather coming up this weekend.
Those temperatures will move into the positives, achieving some melt of the snow that has piled up and the area may even see some rain instead of snow.
Danielle Desjardins, Environment Canada meteorologist, details the system bringing the warm air to the region.
"We've got a lot of warm pacific air that is spilling over into the prairies. So that's going to bump temperatures up to well above normal again. So we expect temperatures to be above the freezing mark for the weekend. So we're looking at daytime highs of just above 0, kind of near 0. We're calling for six degrees on Saturday, that might be a little bit warm, but definitely expecting temperatures to breach that freezing mark."
The precipitation coming in near the end of the weekend could come in a number of forms, says Desjardins.
"So right now, the system tracking through on the weekend is going to bring a bunch of mixed precipitation to the southern portion of the province. So we could see briefly some showers as the system tracks across, maybe a little bit of freezing rain, but that will quickly flip over to snow as the cold front swings through and temperatures drop below 0 again. So possibly a little bit of rain, maybe a little bit of freezing precipitation and then flipped to snow."
That cold after the weekend will be closer to normal for this time of year, unlike the frigid temperatures we've seen so far this winter.
"Basically for the start of next week, we're seeing temperatures go back to around normal for this time of year. Highs in the minus single digits, our normals are high of -5 and a low of -16, so we're gonna see temperatures kind of settled back into normal for this time of year."
With a bit of a warmer period Desjardins reminds people to keep an eye out for any ice that might have formed over the weekend.
"With the mixed precipitation and the freezing with this next system coming in, definitely keeping on roadways, they could get a little slippery, a little icy with the rain and then the drop in temperature. So give yourself enough time to get where you need to be and just take precautions. Drive defensively on the roads and be safe."
