An unusually warm system laid down enough rain to ice up most roads around the southeast.

The southeast is coming down from a major system over the weekend that left much of the province covered in ice and snow this morning.

The deceptively-snowy ground has seen a layer of ice settle on top thanks toa combination of the precipitation and unusually warm weather.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Danielle Desjardins talks about the storm and what the area saw.

"In the southeast, precipitation mainly started as rain and freezing rain and then switched over to snow, so we don't have a whole lot of snowfall reports from the southeast it's mainly from kind of West Central region, but anywhere from 10 to 15 more or less millimetres of rain were reported in the Southeast."

"So this event in particular, mainly fell as rain, which is a little bit odd for December, but there was a lot of warm air coming in from the Pacific and it was even a little bit warmer than we had expected. Snowfall amounts were a little bit less than rainfall amounts which were a little bit higher."

That ice won't be melting away anytime soon as Environment Canada expecting more cold, with Desjardins saying there'll be an unseasonable gust this week.

"Expecting temperatures to be well below the freezing mark for the rest of the week. In fact, it's going to be quite cold on Wednesday and Thursday, so we do have another ridge of high pressure bringing in cold arctic air to the region for Wednesday and Thursday. But overall other than those two cold days, it looks like temperatures will be around normal for this time of year, so kind of in the negative single digits."

There'll be some more light snow coming in over the next couple of days, with Desjardins urging caution for people driving.

"Give yourself a lot of time to get to where you need to be. If you need to travel today, roads are definitely still messy, so if you can, delay travel as we clean up after the system. That is of course preferred, but if you do need to travel, take precautions. Leave a lot of distance between you and the next car, because roads are still gonna be quite icy.

Desjardins also alerts people that conditions on Wednesday and Thursday may deteriorate into extreme warning conditions and cautions people to watch out in advance.
