Across the province, extreme cold warnings are going up in a number of areas, many of which are right by Manitoba's border, but Estevan has managed to keep away from that.
The latest forecasts are showing an unseasonable cold running across the entirety of the prairies, with more northern and eastern areas, such as Yorkton and western Manitoba, seeing those warnings coming in.
Environment Canada Meteorologist Danielle Desjardins talks about the system setting the mercury so low in the prairies.
"We have a ridge of high pressure that's kind of settling into the province yet again, bringing bitterly cold arctic air to the prairies. The axis of the coldest temperatures is kind of extending from the Melfort area to Yorkton down southeast through southern Manitoba."
"So luckily, Estevan itself escaped the coldest air, but that doesn't mean it wasn't cold. Temperatures dipped into the mid-minus 20s and wind chills into the minus 30s. But of course, our extreme cold warnings are minus 40 or colder. So you guys just escaped it, but it was close, the coldest air is just on your doorstep."
Desjardins says that those warnings are mainly impacting the Yorkton, Broadview, Wynyard, Kamsack, Melfort, and Hudson Bay areas.
Estevan will have a bit more chilly weather to deal with though that will stills tay out of extreme ranges.
"There's gonna be another pretty chilly night tonight with temperatures dipping to the high -20°. So kind of approaching minus 30°, but luckily there's not a lot of wind because we are under a high-pressure system where it could be up to 15 kilometers an hour or so. So we're expecting the wind chills to be in the mid-minus 30s again for Estevan."
Afterwards, it'll be a short wait through some cold air for the whole province before a warm weekend breaks through.
"That extreme cold is kind of gonna stay in a similar area to last night, so we're expecting extreme cold warnings to stay out for some portions of southeastern Saskatchewan and then southern Manitoba. It doesn't look like Estevan will be hit the hardest, but after tomorrow it looks like there's some moderating air, a little bit of warmer air coming into the Prairie, so temperatures should climb into the mid teens and actually even into the single digits by the weekend."
