SaskPower is announcing that they will be increasing the amount they collect on bills in accordance with the federal carbon tax increase.

As of January 1st, 2025, the federal carbon tax will increase from $80 to $95 per tonne of CO2 equivalent emissions. To cover the increase, SaskPower says it will increase the carbon tax amount collected on bills by a system-wide average of 2.9 per cent.

SaskPower says that the rider must increase as they look to reflect the impact of annual increases to the federal carbon tax, as well as revisions to the emissions thresholds applied to coal-fired power generation.

People's bills will change according to their consumption and rate class, with the average residential customer expected to see an increase of $26 in 2025, bringing their total carbon tax payments on electricity to an average of $107 per year.

Farm customers will meanwhile see an average increase of $75 this year, for an average total of $314 per year.
