As temperatures remain frigid, many may turn to space heaters to stay warm, but Brad Hutton, fire chief of Redvers, advises caution when using extra heat sources, particularly around Christmas decorations.

Hutton emphasized the importance of furnace maintenance to ensure homes stay warm during the holidays.

"Preferably don't use any space heaters in your house," said Hutton.“Try to have your furnaces and stuff serviced and maintained so that your furnace is able to maintain the heat in the house properly,” he said.

For those using space heaters or other temporary heat sources, Hutton urged keeping a safe distance from holiday décor and furnishings.

“Keep them presents and even your tree decorations or your tree away from the vents in the house—that’s best,” he said. “If you’ve got a real tree, the vents are obviously gonna dry out the tree quicker.”

Hutton also reminded residents to be cautious with baseboard heaters, which can run hot.

“They tend to run hotter too, so definitely avoid putting stuff by baseboard heaters,” he said. “If you have to use temporary or extra heat or fans in your house, keep them a safe distance from walls, furniture, and trees.”

Taking these precautions can help ensure a safe and cozy holiday season.
