Estevan Minor Baseball is gearing up for another exciting year with big plans ahead. After a successful 2024, which saw the city host five provincial tournaments, the organization is looking forward to even more in 2025.
Mel Murray, president of Estevan Minor Baseball, reflected on what he called a "fantastic" year for the organization. Estevan hosted five provincial tournaments in 2024, further solidifying its reputation. Looking ahead, Murray said plans are in place to host more tournaments in 2025, including hopes of hosting the 18U AAA Select Tournament over the May long weekend. "That’s going to be a big event — top-level baseball coming to Estevan," he said.
Murray also noted a surge in baseball's popularity since the COVID-19 pandemic. "The interest is really growing. Since COVID hit, baseball’s come back, and I understand soccer and girls' softball are also making a strong return."
In another big move, Murray shared that the Southeast Twins baseball team, currently based in Alameda, will relocate to Estevan for the 2025 season. "We’ve had meetings all winter," he said. "With Weyburn, Estevan, and the Southeast rural area, including Carnduff, all parties thought it would be best to get more kids involved and bring top-quality players to Estevan."
While Estevan will serve as the team’s main base, games will still be held in Weyburn and Alameda. "The rural kids can come to Estevan, and we’ll run the Southeast Twins 15U AAA team from here," Murray said.
Blair Beck will take over as head coach for the 15U AAA Twins, bringing his experience to the team, while Trent Dorance will continue coaching the 18U AAA Twins. Murray is excited for the season ahead. "The 15U AAA Twins will be sponsored by Performance Pump from Estevan, and we’re really excited about that," he said.
The teams are preparing for the upcoming season with winter clinics. "Trent and Blair are already running baseball camps out in Glen Ewen, focusing on hitting, pitching, and all the fundamentals to get ready for the spring season," Murray said.
Murray expressed optimism for the upcoming year. "The new year’s going to be really good."
