Five athletes from the Estevan Figure Skating Club delivered strong performances at the Skate Saskatchewan Prejuvenile and Juvenile Sectionals, held this past weekend in Rosetown. The event marked a pivotal competition in the skaters' season, providing a platform to showcase their talents and hard work.
Board member Janelle Gedak shared details about the competition, emphasizing its importance as a step further into the competitive season for many of the athletes.
“Our skaters had a great weekend,” Gedak said. “This competition is part of the more competitive phase of the season and provides a wonderful opportunity for our athletes to grow.”
The skaters represented Estevan achieving personal bests and earning podium finishes.
- Sofia Erana-Schemegelsky competed in the Pre-Juvenile U11 category, achieving a personal best score of 13.17.
- Janiyah Laforga, in the Pre-Juvenile U13 category, also set a personal best score of 16.32.
- Meeka Gedak, competing in the same category, earned a personal best of 17.56 and made her debut in the Star 7 category, earning 11.06 for her short program.
- Braxton Pouteaux showcased versatility by competing in both the Star 6 and Star 7 events. In the Star 6 long program, Braxton earned a score of 18.48, securing a bronze medal. She followed up with another bronze medal in the Star 7 short program, scoring 14.91.
- Rachel Duncan delivered an impressive performance in the Star 9 short program, earning 21.09 points and a gold medal.
“These events are a lot of fun for the skaters,” Gedak said. “Figure skating is an individual sport, but at competitions, they get to cheer each other on and enjoy a real sense of team spirit.”
Looking ahead, Estevan skaters will return to the ice for their next competition on January 10th in Dalmeny, where they will participate in a regional event. This competition will feature athletes from Star 5 and higher levels, continuing the momentum from Rosetown.
In addition to their individual success, Gedak acknowledged the importance of community support in organizing such events, from volunteers to judges, vendors, and technical panel members. “A lot of work goes into hosting competitions like this, and the Rosetown team did an excellent job of organizing everything,” she said.
As the season progresses, more opportunities await skaters across all levels, and the Estevan Figure Skating Club is eager to see what their athletes will achieve in the coming months.
