A low-pressure system is making its way through Central Alberta Wednesday, bringing with it heavy snow and cold temperatures.

Heather Pimiskern, meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, says the system is developing over southern Alberta near the U.S. border. She notes widespread snow will extend from the Grand Prairie region all the way to the Cypress Hills area. A snowfall warning has been issued for the region.

The snow is expected to begin this morning, with poor visibility on highways due to wind gusts of up to 50 km/h. The high today for Red Deer is around minus 16 with the windchill making it feel like minus 29 this morning and minus 22 this afternoon.

"We do anticipate that conditions will begin to improve later this afternoon into this evening as the low-pressure system pushes off into Saskatchewan," said Pimiskern. "Behind the system we're just expecting some remnant flurries tonight into early tomorrow morning."

She notes snowfall amounts will vary, but the Red Deer region will likely see between 5 and 10 cm. The heaviest amounts are expected around Stettler and towards the Saskatchewan border.

"We do anticipate that there will be a widespread 10 to 15 cm of snow, it's just dependent on where that band of snow sets up. That will determine how much snow your region will get," explained Pimiskern.

Conditions are expected to improve heading towards the weekend and into next week. Central Alberta could see a high of zero on Sunday and possibly plus six on Monday.
