Topics during the Dec. 19 regular Wolf Creek Public Schools (WCPS) Board of Trustees meeting included the new science curriculum implementation, the average class size, and the fall budget.

Here are the highlights:

Joint Online Parent Information Sessions in Blackfalds

The Board received a report on the joint online parent information sessions hosted by the four schools in Blackfalds (Iron Ridge Elementary Campus, Iron Ridge Intermediate Campus, Iron Ridge Junior Campus, and Iron Ridge Secondary Campus) to promote parent engagement. The session on December 3, 2024, saw the highest attendance to date. These meetings are also recorded to allow parents to view them later, a feature that has been well-utilized. The initiative aims to evolve into a joint school council for the elementary, intermediate, and junior high schools. Additionally, Iron Ridge Secondary Campus has garnered enough parent interest to establish its own school council, marking a significant step forward in community engagement.

New Science Curriculum Implementation for Grades 4-6

The Board received a report on the ongoing leadership of Education Services Coordinator Kaylene Reddekopp in implementing the new Science curriculum for Grades 4-6. These sessions focus on a single theme from the curriculum. The morning sessions explore the curriculum's structure and content, while the afternoon sessions are dedicated to finding, developing, and organizing resources. To support teachers, Google Classrooms have been created for each grade level, allowing resources and ideas to be shared across the division. This initiative ensures teachers are well-equipped to deliver the new curriculum effectively.

Board Recognition of ÉSLCHS BeeWise Innovators

The Board honoured École Secondaire Lacombe Composite High School teacher Steve Schultz and students Eugene Lofgh Malabuyoc, Stijn Tans, Wakefield Roadhouse, and Judah Boyko for their award-winning BeeWise Monitoring System. Showcased at the AZTech Awards on September 27 in Calgary, the system uses cost-effective technology to monitor hive health, addressing the critical issue of declining bee populations. Recognized for its simplicity and innovation, the project earned the "Best Prototype" award at the Tech Futures Challenge. The Board commends their work in advancing environmental sustainability and innovation.

Class Size Average Report

The Board received a report on class size averages across the Division. The data provides an overview of current class sizes and will be made available on the Division’s website for stakeholders to review. This transparency ensures ongoing communication and accountability regarding classroom environments.

WCPS Fall Budget 2024/2025 Update

The Board received the updated Fall Budget for the 2024/2025 school year. The revised budget reflects actual enrollment numbers and incorporates adjustments for key areas such as insurance, utilities, emergent issues, and changes required by Alberta Education. This process ensures the budget aligns with current projections and addresses material changes for the school year.
