Schools are celebrating another calendar year in the books as 2024 comes to a close and they're able to start up the second half of their school year.

For the Southeast Cornerstone Public School Division, that year has a number of milestones that they hit.

Director of Education Keith Keating thanked the students and staff for all of their accomplishments and achievements over the year.

He also pointed out one area that he feels the southeast did well in.

"Some of the great things have been the really good reading results that we continue to see across the school division, some of the highest Grade 3 reading results we've ever seen here in the division as well as very high graduation rates across the school division that continue to outpace the province."

Keating says that the administration has been in a bind with funding over the year which they've had to struggle with.

"One of the challenges is that we continue to manage over here are some of the tight budgets from the provincial level. So it's about managing those budgets while still providing the support that are needed by students across the division."

In 2025 Keating says he hopes to have a good year as the province works towards their provincial education plan.

"We're looking at a lot on a number of things. One of them is the provincial education plan and some of the new provincial assessment plans that's being put into place in the next few years. So we'll look forward to seeing what that develops into, looking at how that supports learning across the province."
