Red Deer Emergency Services (RDES) reminds residents of fireworks restrictions when celebrating New Year’s Eve.

“We want to remind Red Deerians to leave fireworks to the professionals,” said Tim Kivell, RDES Fire Marshal. “Fireworks can be dangerous and can have serious environmental repercussions if proper planning and precautions are not in place, which is why we require licensed professionals to be involved.”

The city implemented a Fireworks Bylaw in 2019 which requires a permit to discharge any type of fireworks, including consumer, display, and pyrotechnic fireworks.

To obtain a permit, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • The permit holder must be a certified Fireworks Supervisor or Pyrotechnician as recognized by Natural Resources Canada.

  • Obtain written consent from the landowner where the fireworks will be discharged.

  • Provide a detailed description of the fireworks event and a site plan.

  • Pay the necessary permit and inspection fees.

Red Deerians are encouraged to attend one of many New Year’s Eve events or fireworks displays planned in Central Alberta.

“For those not wanting to attend a public event, we recommend considering other, safer ways to celebrate,” said Kivell. “Glow sticks, noise makers, family crafts, or silly string are all fun, family-friendly ways to celebrate safely.”
