Every community in Central Alberta has different options for disposal of Christmas trees.
Categories

If you have a real tree for Christmas, the question is always, "What do I do with my old Christmas tree?"

It's important that you dispose of the tree following local guidelines, as most communities have their own services for pick up or disposal.

Here is a list of tree disposal for some communities in Central Alberta:

Town of Sylvan Lake

Please place your tree in the same location as your normal waste collection, by 8:00 AM on January 6. Remove all decorations from your tree, and place on the street, 1 meter away from your garbage cart.

Please note it may take up to 10 days for collection.

Town of Ponoka

The Town of Ponoka’s annual collection of compostable Christmas trees begins Tuesday, January 21. The Town will make one pass down each back alley in Ponoka to pick up compostable Christmas trees that have been placed outside for collection.

Ponoka residents are asked to place their Christmas tree for pick up at their back alley no later than Monday, January 20. Residents who do not have a back alley can place Christmas trees near the curb at the front of their property, ensuring the items are visible for pick up.

Residents can also take their compostable trees to the Waste Transfer Station free of charge.

Town of Innisfail

Christmas Tree Pickup will take place from January 6 to January 10, 2025. Trees left curbside in front yards will be collected free of charge by Town staff. Collection may take up to a week, but trees must be placed for collection by the date listed above. Please do not include fake trees, tinsel, or decorations.

After January 10, Trees can be taken to the Waste Transfer Station free of charge for residents. The facility is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm.

City of Red Deer

The Red Deer Fire Department will pick up registered trees with a donation.

  1. Make a donation to our charity at reddeerfirefighterschildrenscharity.com
  2. Provide an address in the message part of your donation for us to pick up your tree
  3. Place your tree outside on your front lawn by January 10th

You can give your tree a great new purpose in City parks spaces! You can drop your undecorated tree off at one of the locations below and the Parks and Public Works teams will collect it and then mulch it up for use in parks and trail spaces.
