Sagehill Community Futures has had a dynamic year of growth and community engagement, demonstrating a strong commitment to local business development, training, and inclusivity. Under the leadership of Susan Wehage, the organization has made significant strides in supporting small businesses, enhancing workforce diversity, and fostering community development across Saskatchewan.
In 2024, Sagehill hosted a total of 24 virtual and in-person training sessions, benefiting 746 participants. These training sessions covered a wide range of topics aimed at building skills for both individuals and organizations. One of the highlights was the Employer Conference Part III, which focused on effective recruitment and retention strategies for employers in the region.
Sagehill’s work extends beyond local training programs. The organization has partnered with colleagues from Campbellton, NB, on a national project called Hire For Talent. This initiative is aimed at changing employer mindsets about hiring individuals with disabilities, thus fostering greater inclusivity in the workforce. This project is part of Sagehill’s broader commitment to promoting diversity in employment practices.
Throughout the year, Sagehill’s team has been on the road, visiting over 30 communities across the region, connecting with businesses and community leaders. During Small Business Week, they took the opportunity to visit local employers, offering tailored support and insight. Due to strong demand, Sagehill organized an additional in-person training session on Conflict Resolution & Communication Skills, which sold out within two weeks. The organization also hosted a session, both in-person and virtually, where an entrepreneur shared her journey of starting a small business.
This year also saw the launch of Sagehill’s Women's Initiative Fund, a new loan program specifically designed to support women entrepreneurs. The fund has received significant uptake, helping women access the financial resources needed to grow and sustain their businesses.
Sagehill’s lending program continued to make an impact in the community, investing a total of $951,510.16 into small businesses, with an additional $344,132.00 leveraged from other sources. These investments are a testament to the organization’s ongoing efforts to foster entrepreneurial growth and job creation across the region.
As the holiday season approached, Sagehill announced its 12 Days of Christmas campaign, encouraging locals to shop small and support regional businesses. Looking ahead, the organization is gearing up to celebrate its 40th anniversary in June 2025, with a special event planned for June 25 in Humboldt.
In its ongoing commitment to education, Sagehill continues to offer virtual workshops on Community Economic Development, covering topics like grant writing, volunteer management, and securing sponsorships. The organization plans to expand this series in 2025, further contributing to the growth and sustainability of local communities.
Sagehill has also been an active sponsor of youth-focused initiatives, including three youth events: The Circle with Big Brothers Big Sisters, a youth summer camp hosted by Community Services, and a Youth Empowerment conference held in Wakaw. Additionally, the organization continues to sponsor a scholarship for students in the Business Administration Program at Carlton Trail Regional College.
Sagehill also secured and filled its provincial contract with the Ministry of Immigration and Career Training for the Self Employment Program, helping individuals start and sustain their businesses. Furthermore, the organization has continued its work with clients through the Entrepreneurs with Disabilities program, which serves both Saskatchewan and Manitoba and is administered by the Community Futures Association of Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
Through these initiatives and more, Sagehill Community Futures remains a key player in supporting the growth of local businesses, promoting inclusivity, and enhancing community development across Saskatchewan.
“Sagehill’s impact is driven by the communities and businesses we serve,” said Susan Wehage, Director of Sagehill Community Futures. “We are proud of the strides we’ve made this year, and we look forward to continuing our work in 2025 and beyond.”
