With New Year's Eve right around the corner, SGI is hoping to remind anyone heading out to celebrate and find a safe ride home.

Impaired driving can result in a plethora of consequences that can include suspensions or a driving prohibition, impoundment, fines, criminal charges, time in jail, and the most costly, a life.

Jeremy Pilon, communications consultant at SGI, noted that this time of the year, similar to summer, the number of impaired drivers tends to go up.

"We've been saying all year that the greatest gift you can give someone is a safe ride home because that means you can continue to celebrate and enjoy each other's company for years to come," he said. "It's no different this New Year, if people are going out and are going to get impaired, find yourself a safe ride home."

Those going out are encouraged to plan ahead, get a taxi or cab, have a designated driver, walk, get a ride from a family member or friend, or even stay the night.

"Over the last decade, we've seen it go from 70 people dying every year to impaired driving to in that 20 to 30 people range over the last few years," shared Pilon. "We're certainly seeing those numbers go down quite a bit, but here at SGI and for many of the families who've lost people to impaired driving, it's not enough until that number is zero."
