Temperatures in Central Alberta are expected to take a dip as we make our way into the New Year.

The week begins with temperatures sitting around –8 in the region, but will decrease to around –10, and by the end of the week, we could see temperatures around –20.

“In terms of storm systems, it does look quiet, it’s a little unsettled with some clouds and some light flurries,” said Christy Climenhaga, a scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

At this time of the year, daytime temperatures usually sit around –6, with a low of –17.

Climenhaga explained that temperatures in December were above seasonal, with very mild conditions, but by the end of the week we’ll be tipping towards the below normal range.

“Temperatures are going to be on that cooler side,” she said. “A good kind of chunk of that cooler weather will take us through towards the end of the weekend, so it's a longer cooler snap to start off next month.”

A snow system is expected to move through Central Alberta over the weekend.

“At this point, it doesn't look like overly too much snow in the Red Deer area, but it is still very early,” Climenhaga said. “If you have weekend plans, check the forecast a little closer to see how that system is doing.”
