The Humboldt and District SPCA has had a remarkable year, marked by growth, community support, and exciting plans for the future. Board member Joanne Koski shared her optimism as the shelter enters the holiday season, noting several milestones that reflect the generosity and commitment of the community.

"This has been a great year for the SPCA," Koski said in a recent interview. "We’ve accessed a brand-new location, and we’re busy working on renovations to hopefully move into that building soon. It’s going to give us more space for animals and a lot more outdoor area to work with."

The new facility will not only provide much-needed room for animals but also offer opportunities for the development of community spaces. Koski highlighted plans to collaborate with the city in the spring on a dog park, with future intentions to build a kenneling facility for those who need a safe space for their pets while away. The expansion marks a significant step in the SPCA's mission to better serve the area’s animal population and community needs.

Koski also expressed deep gratitude for the public's overwhelming support in the form of donations and volunteer efforts.

"We’ve received so many business and personal donations for food and supplies, and we can’t thank the public enough for what they’ve done for us," she said. "We’re especially grateful to the angels — the business groups, individuals, and volunteers who have donated their time and efforts to help with the renovations."

The shelter’s ongoing fundraising campaign, "Paws for a Cause," continues to encourage donations until the new year to support the transition to the new facility. Koski took a moment to recognize the shelter’s hardworking staff, emphasizing their dedication despite challenging weather conditions.

"We want to take a couple of minutes to recognize our employees — Alexis, Abby, Sydney, and Shayla — who are there every day, looking after the animals in all kinds of weather," Koski said. "Their commitment is truly invaluable."

As the year wraps up, the SPCA staff, board, and animals are looking forward to a safe and warm holiday season.

"We want to wish everybody a Merry Christmas from the SPCA board, staff, and the cats and dogs that will be spending the holiday safe and warm at the shelter," Koski added.

The Humboldt and District SPCA's successes this year are a testament to the spirit of collaboration, with a strong foundation of community support helping the shelter achieve new heights in its mission to care for animals in need.
