While we have seen rather warm weather to finish off 2024, it will be rather cold to start the new year heading into the weekend.

Christy Climenhaga a scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) talked about what we will see in the next few days.

"We've got this pattern where some cold arctic air is going to push into not only Alberta but across much of Saskatchewan too. We can expect it through the weekend for sure."

According to ECCC, today's high is -17, tomorrow is also -17 while the weekend high is in the -15 degree range.

"Maybe a -20 into some of your overnight periods, especially Thursday night into Friday morning. But keep in mind, with the wind, it will still feel closer to the minus 30s into your early morning hours."

She explained that we are currently in a pattern switch from above-season temperatures to below.

"We are looking at another system possibly moving through on the weekend. Doesn't look overly strong at this point, but could bring with it a few centimetres of snowfall to Alberta."

If you are travelling make sure you check the weather conditions and road conditions before heading out and make sure you are driving to the conditions of the road.

Environment Canada says the Red Deer area was about 2.5 degrees warmer than average in December. The area received about 5.3 mm of precipitation during the month which is 43 per cent of normal for December.
