The southeast is preparing for a whole new year, with a new system bringing some cooler air into the mix.

That's already changed the above-average Christmas weather to below-average conditions on New Year's Day.

The temperature is expected to drop even further this week, as explained by Environment Canada Meteorologist Danielle Desjardins.

"We've got a Ridge of high pressure bringing in a bunch of Arctic air flowing in over the prairies. So we're looking at temperatures that are going to be quite cold with lows into minus 20°s and even into the minus 30°s overnight Friday into Saturday, and then only seeing highs into the -20° for daytime highs. So that's quite a bit below normal normal for this time of year."

While it's a harsh start to 2025, Desjardins says that it could be worse with some weaker winds only potentially causing an extreme cold warning.

"Luckily, the wind doesn't tend to be too strong. Maybe winds up to 15 kilometers an hour or so. For the wind chill factor we could see wind chills into a mid minus 30s, maybe even pushing -40°, especially overnight Friday night if you get one little gust. So just keep an eye out, there may be extreme cold warnings issued if we think that it'll cross that -40° threshold."

After a bit of light snow today Desjardins says that the week will at least be snowfall-free.

"It doesn't look like there's any huge chance of precipitation. You got this, you know, a little bit here and there. So some light flurries kind of through the weekend. It's still a bit early, but looking like next week there might be a better chance, but it's still too early to tell. That would be like to next Thursday, Friday."

Desjardins expects to also see warmer temperatures after the weekend with those approaching seasonal averages.

"That ridge of high pressure that's gonna be bringing colder air into the region, it sticks around more or less for the weekend. So looking at temperatures starting to rebound on Sunday. We're going to see daytime highs into the minus teens. So like the -16 and -17° range and then kind of midweek, we see a little bit more warming up until about normal for this time of year."
