The southeast has been plunged into an extreme cold warning today as temperatures have fallen below seasonal.

That's expected to last well into the weekend, with plenty more cold to come.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Danielle Desjardins talks about what people can expect.

"We have an Arctic ridge of high pressure that's affecting most of the province, so we have extreme cold warnings out for a large portion of southern Saskatchewan, expecting temperatures to drop into the minus 30s and wind chills are around -40, even maybe a little bit colder."

That stretches as far north as Saskatoon, with Desjardins detailing that it'll stick partway through the weekend.

"We're expecting it to persist off and on until about Sunday. So, Saturday will be quite cold as well, especially in the overnight periods, with temperatures dipping into the minus 30s again."

With all that cold weather coming into the area Desjardins gives some safety tips so that people can deal with the snow.

"Definitely make sure if you are going outside, limit your time outside, frostbite can occur in minutes. Layer up and dress appropriately for the weather."

While cold weather is in the southeast now, Desjardins says we won't have to wait long for a bit of warmth to return to the area.

"Temperatures are going to start to moderate by the end of the weekend and we are expecting temperatures to climb to near normal and above seasonal, but sometimes it's pretty difficult to kind of clear out this cold air, so I am expecting it by the end of the weekend, but it could be delayed to get back right up to normal till about mid-week next week."
