The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings are now within three points of the Yorkton Terriers for 1st in the Viterra Division after picking up two crucial points over the Terriers Sunday afternoon in Yorkton. The Red Wings would come back from a 1-0 first period deficit to win 3-2.

“I thought the guys battled hard,” head coach Cody Mapes said after the game. The team would spend the majority with a shortened bench after defenseman Simon Martin left 10 minutes into the game.

“I thought our five defensemen did a good job,” he added. Mapes also noted it was another strong game from Angelo Zol, who is undefeated in 2025.

Yorkton got on the board first when Tylan Henrikson scored 4:30 into the game. This lead would hold until the second period.

In the middle frame, Weyburn would tie it up. Josh Sale, acquired by the Wings in the trade that saw Dazza Mitchell go to Humboldt, would net his first wearing the Winged Wheel with 9:17 to play. Blake Betson and Luke Dekay assisted him with the goal.

Weyburn would take the lead 6:05 into the third period when Lucas Schmid netted his sixth of the year. Ethan Dekay had the assist on the goal.

The lead, though, would be gone just moments later as Thomas Ries scored at 8:56. The goal, which came on the power play, evened the score at 2-2.

Then, Jerome Maharaj would get a chance on the power play with 5:20 remaining in the game.

“The puck got rimmed around, and I was there to pick it up,” Maharaj said of the game-winning goal. “(The) d-man was just kind of in the shooting lane, so I shot around him, and went low blocker.”

The game-winner was assisted by Cyprus Smith-Davis.

The Red Wings will now get a couple of days rest before the schedule resumes on what will be a busy January. They play at Crescent Point Place on Wednesday night, hosting the Terriers. The game kicks off a stretch of five in 10 days, with nine games in total remaining for the month.
