The southeast is seeing temperatures return to their previous above-seasonal status this week with some warm air hitting the area.

That's expected to come in Wednesday with the worst of the cold being gone after Monday night.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Danielle Desjardins takes a look at the forecast to see whaty's on the horizon.

"We're going to have one more cold night overnight tonight expecting temperatures to dip into the high -20, a little bit cold wind chills to the minus 30s, but that will be the end of the extreme cold for the week."

"We're expecting some big warming over the prairies for this coming week. So starting tomorrow, we're going to see daytime highs still in the minus teens, but temperatures continuing to warm overnight tomorrow night and into Wednesday. So by midweek, we're gonna see temperatures climb to the -5, -6° range, and that's going to persist into the weekend."

Desjardins says that a few areas in Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan will even see melting temperatures over the week.

Here in the southeast, we'll be seeing some snow falling as part of a wider, soft system.

"We're going to see a kind of weak cold front move through the province Wednesday, starting in the morning in the western sections and making its way to southeastern Saskatchewan by the afternoon. That's going to bring some snow to the area, maybe looking at 2 to 4 centimeters possibly. So not a whole lot of snow, but that's not gonna affect temperatures too badly. Temperatures will rebound nicely the next day, so we're still expecting daytime highs to be in the mid-single digits."

That won't be long-lasting as Desjardins says we can expect more seasonal temperatures around -10 during the latter part of the weekend.

People should keep an eye on the week as multiple small snow systems could see that pile-up.

"We're not seeing a very significant system, but there will be a few chances of accumulating snow once midweek and then over the weekend and then into next week it looks like at least the first half of the week, not seeing a major cooldown for the province. There is a cool down once again for Manitoba, but it should say east of Saskatchewan, but it might be a little bit cooler than these mid-minus single digits that's what we're going to see from midweek onward."
