The Estevan Police Service (EPS) has reported mixed results in its most recent statistics for 2024. Police Chief Jamie Blunden said the numbers reflect ongoing challenges, while also showing progress in some areas, such as impaired driving.

Blunden noted a 27 per cent drop in alcohol-related impaired driving incidents in 2024. However, cases of impairment due to drugs increased by 13 per cent, a trend Blunden said highlights the need for more public education.

“Year after year, we see a bit more impaired driving by drugs, and I think people need to treat that the same way they treat drinking and driving,” Blunden said. “That’s something we have to educate people about.”

Crimes against persons rose by 13 per cent, with 174 incidents reported in 2024, compared to 154 in 2023. Blunden pointed to a rise in sex crimes, which increased from 32 in 2023 to 37 in 2024. He attributed the increase to issues such as sextortion, often involving youth and online platforms.

Assault and assault causing bodily harm remained relatively stable. However, property crimes saw a 10 per cent increase, driven by an 86 per cent jump in motor vehicle thefts, which rose from four cases in 2023 to 26 in 2024.

“Many of these cases involved individuals taking vehicles without the owner’s consent, but with some prior connection,” Blunden explained.

Theft under $5,000 also increased by 18 per cent, from 197 incidents in 2023 to 233 in 2024. Blunden urged residents to secure their belongings in their backyards, sheds, and when using public spaces. He emphasized that individuals looking to make a quick profit target these items for resale, underlining the need to stay vigilant in keeping personal items secure.
