The Innisfail RCMP and Innisfail Fire Department battled for bragging rights in support of the Innisfail Food Bank.

The 3rd annual Battle of the Badges RCMP Vs Fire charity hockey game raised $4,410 and 1,000 lbs of food for the Innisfail Food Bank.

“It went well. The goal of the game is to replenish the food bank and have some fun with the community,” said Craig Nelson, Innisfail RCMP Constable and one of the event organizers.

With demand for food bank services continuing to rise in Central Alberta, Nelson is hopeful that the event will help fill shelves after a busy holiday season.

The event also fosters positive interactions between first responders and the community they serve.

“The community seems to rally behind it, they seem to enjoy it, and we hope to be able to carry it on year after year now,” Nelson said.

This year, the Innisfail Fire Department came out victorious, winning 12 to seven.

They were up three to one in the first period, with the RCMP coming back in the second, but falling short in the third.

“It was a good game, a well-fought game, and it seemed like the community had a lot of fun there,” Nelson said. “We're going to have to turn around and come up with the win for next year.”

The fourth annual Battle of the Badges is already in the works for next January.
