After many entries and much consideration, Cassidy Roberts of Sylvan Lake has been named our first-ever Strand 360-Sunny 94 Athlete of the Month.
Roberts, a basketball player for the HJ Cody High School team, talks about how she got into playing.
"I think it was around the age of 6. It started with a league that was in Ontario, and it was pretty big back there. And now I just continued it."
Roberts says that apart from basketball, she enjoys other sports as well.
"I play a lot of sports. My biggest ones are probably soccer, Track and field, and just anything that involves running, really. Being a good athlete is one of my best attributes."
Speaking of attributes, Rose Jacques, who nominated Cassidy, wrote why she is deserving of this award.
"Cassidy is incredibly hardworking with incredible skills, receiving the academic and athletic excellence award. Her strongest trait is uplifting all her teammates on and off the court. Cassidy also never shies away from any volunteering and is very active in our community This nomination would be a wonderful reminder for her to give herself grace for all she brings to her community, school and team."
Roberts, who volunteers as a basketball referee, also likes to help out the community of Sylvan Lake. She is involved with the school's Interact Club which is connected to the local Rotary Club. She does a lot of community dinners, and events and was just recently in the Sylvan Lake Santa Claus Parade.
Coming up this Summer, she will be part of an international basketball tour to London, England. She was nominated by her coaches, sent in an application, and was accepted. It would be a two-week camp where she would play against other teams and participate in big tournaments.
When asked what kind of message she would send to younger athletes, Roberts says.
"Continue with it and do it until you know that you don't love it anymore. A lot of young players, get into this and their sense of self-worth is diminished because they see other people that are better than them. So just don't quit, and if it's something you love, stick with it."
