Several Central Alberta school divisions have been impacted by a data breach involving PowerSchool, a widely used student information system

Among the school divisions affected are Red Deer Public Schools, Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools, Wolf Creek Public Schools and Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools. Chinook's Edge School Division says it was not impacted.

PowerSchool identified the breach on December 28, 2024, and acted immediately to secure the affected data and mitigate any ongoing risks.

This breach was widespread, impacting PowerSchool clients across Canada, the United States, and internationally. It involved current and past student and staff information stored within the PowerSchool Student Information System.

The compromised student data includes:

  • Student names
  • Student mailing addresses
  • Dates of Birth - students only
  • Student home phone numbers
  • Basic student medical information (in some cases), such as details about asthma, diabetes, or allergies.

No financial information related to individuals was involved in the breach.

PowerSchool has made assurances that the data obtained during the breach has been destroyed and that they are implementing enhanced security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The company is also working closely with law enforcement.

No action is required from staff, students, or families at this time.
