The Weyburn Lacrosse Association have been busy this year, including today as their Little Thrashers Lacrosse Academy has gotten underway, helping those aged 8 and under learn and enjoy the sport of lacrosse. Staci Labrecque is the president of the Weyburn Lacrosse Assocation who states the overwhelming excitement for the academy.
“The Weyburn Lacrosse Association started eight years ago, and every year we've seen growth. Last year, we've seen our growth skyrocket and it's no change this year. When the registration opened up for little Thrasher, we were genuinely surprised to see it filled within two days. So, it's an exciting time for lacrosse, and have certainty become a lacrosse community in Weyburn.”
One of the two official national sports in Canada, lacrosse has skyrocketed in popularity over the last few years, including in Saskatchewan thanks a lot to the addition of the Saskatchewan Rush in the NLL back in 2016, winning two championships and five division titles since then. Here in Weyburn, as Labrecque states, that popularity is growing from ages even as young as two years old.
“The Little Thrashers is a family program; we offer programming from 2-8 years old it’s short sessions where we focus on play and Lacrosse is a lot of fun, so kids pick up on it really quickly.”
Lacrosse has continued to grow with the youth in Weyburn, with registration now open for their box lacrosse season that runs from March to June. Labrecque expects those registrations to fill just as fast as the Little Thrashers.
“The registration for a regular programming, the Thrashers lacrosse, opened up on Monday and closes March 15th. However, we’re seeing a really quick influx of registrations so super excited and if you guys are wanting to register, go to www.weyburnthrashers.ca and you will see our registration link there and even if you're just thinking about it, we have a few try lacrosse events coming up as well.”
The Weyburn Lacrosse Association is hosting Try Lacrosse nights, including one this Saturday, January 18th. Free to attend, just bring running shoes, a helmet with a cage and hockey or lacrosse gloves and a water bottle, sticks can be provided. This allows those who are maybe on the fence to try lacrosse and enjoy the fun that the sport has to offer.
