Update: 8:33 pm

Following confirmation of physician coverage, Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre’s Emergency Department (ED) will remain open and operational per regular hours on January 13, 2025.

Other services at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre were not impacted by this temporary disruption in service.

AHS and local medical staff recognize that temporary closures are concerning to the community and continue to collaborate to secure additional supports through ongoing recruitment efforts. AHS is grateful for the support of staff and physicians who work to minimize temporary disruption as much as possible. Additionally AHS appreciates the support of surrounding healthcare centres, and would like to thank the community for its patience and understanding during this time.

Original Story

Due to a sudden and unexpected gap in physician coverage, Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre’s Emergency Department (ED) will be temporarily closed from 11 p.m. tonight until 8 a.m. tomorrow (Tuesday) morning.

During this temporary closure of the ED nursing staff will remain in the department, providing assistance in redirecting/referring patients to alternate emergency departments in neighbouring communities, or other appropriate levels of service, as needed. EMS will remain available to the community and will be re-routed to surrounding facilities, including Lacombe Hospital and Care Centre, Wetaskiwin Hospital and Care Centre or Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.

Other services at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre are not impacted by this temporary closure.

Efforts to secure alternative locum coverage remain ongoing. In the event coverage is secured, the ED will reopen earlier and the community will be informed.
