Sylvan Lake RCMP say there have been multiple reports this winter of vehicles falling through the ice, and with the warmer weather the ice thickness on Sylvan Lake is becoming more unpredictable.

Police are providing a few tips to stay safe while riding on designated trails or out on the lake:

  • Equipping your ATV/UTV with winter tires or tack kits for optimal traction
  • Checking your tire pressure as colder weather can cause air pressure to drop
  • Using reflective decals and lights to increase visibility in low-light conditions
  • Using designated trails and always obey local regulations like speed limits and helmet requirements
  • Never assuming the ice is thick enough to support you – the ice must be at least 8 inches thick in order to support the weight of an ATV or UTV
  • Always let someone know where you are going and how long you plan on being out - if something goes awry, it's easier to get help if someone knows your general location

RCMP remind riders to always use your best judgement and ride on the lake at your own risk.
