At the latest council meeting, the December building permit report was approved, providing a snapshot of construction activity in the region. The report highlighted a range of permit categories, and the financial values associated with them.
In December alone, one miscellaneous building permit was issued, valued at $850,000. When looking at the entire year, a total of 42 building permits were issued in 2024, marking a slight decrease from the 45 permits issued in 2023. The total value of permits for 2024 reached $10,818,257.
The most commonly issued permits for the year fell under the miscellaneous category, with 30 permits issued, totalling a value of $7,432,101. These permits reflect a wide range of construction activities, typically smaller or varied projects.
In the commercial sector, three permits were granted in 2024, amounting to $2,885,156. However, there were no permits issued for single-family homes or multi-family dwellings, signalling a potential slowdown in residential development.
Garages saw a modest amount of activity, with six permits issued and a combined value of $331,000. The industrial sector also saw some development, with two permits issued for a total of $120,000. Lastly, institutional construction accounted for one permit, valued at $50,000.
Overall this shows that while the number of building permits issued has decreased slightly compared to last year, the majority of permits continue to fall under miscellaneous construction. The lack of single-family and multi-family residential permits suggests a trend toward smaller, diverse projects in the region for 2024.
