The Estevan Comprehensive School will play host to a basketball tournament this weekend, inviting teams from around the province.

Trevor Dutka, the coach of the ECS senior boy's team, says that the team has been practicing hard for the mid-season tournament.

"Basically, I learned from the first 3 tournaments we went to before Christmas, and we've been working on our skills, our offence and defence obviously, and that because we wanna perform in our home gym and definitely be very competitive in front of our home crowds."

With a younger team, Dutka says they've had to put in plenty of work to get up to speed.

"We have a young team this year, so we graduated seven last year. So just working on our offence and defence are major things going forward. We've got six grade 10s on the team this year. So yeah, that's the biggest thing right now, is just buying into the culture of senior boys basketball."

Dutka is expecting some competition from a few of the teams coming in over the weekend.

"Generally there's some strong teams coming in, PA Carlton's coming down, we play Lloydminister at 7:00 Friday night and Lloydminister has always got a strong team. Yorkton, Regina, it's a sport, and just like any sport, any team can beat any team any night, especially in our own gym."

"I think we're a little bit more confident in our own gym because that's where we practice. That's where shoot the most shots and stuff like that. So, well, I don't think we're afraid of any teams. Yes, there are some very good basketball teams coming our way this weekend, but we're definitely here to compete."

Dutka says he hopes to see plenty of people at the ECS gym this weekend to cheer on the home team.

"It's just straight-up baseball. We just wanna get it out there to the community that loves coming out. This is one of the few times other than the McCloud series that people can come watch their local high school students play basketball and the boys appreciate it. Nothing's better than having a big hometown crowd cheering you."
