With the recent cold snap, many Central Albertans are letting their vehicles warm up before heading out to their destination. This can be a prime target for criminals looking to steal a running vehicle.
As a result, RCMP detachments across Alberta are set to launch Operation Cold Start this week, an initiative aimed at reducing the theft of idling vehicles.
The annual campaign focuses on working with the public to address crimes of opportunity that occur when vehicles are left running, unlocked, and unattended.
Operation Cold Start will run from January 20 to January 24, 2025, with officers performing various enforcement to help keep vehicles safe.
“Leaving your vehicle running to keep it warm for you seems convenient and it is — not just for you, but also for opportunistic thieves who are looking for vehicles to steal for transportation and to commit additional crimes,” says Cpl. Mike Black of the Alberta RCMP’s Auto Theft Unit. “Operation Cold Start aims to reduce auto theft by educating Albertans on steps they can take to help keep their vehicle safe.”
Officers will check unattended idling vehicles to ensure that keys are not left inside and that they are properly secured. Police will also participate in educational efforts to teach the public how to better protect their property.
As part of these efforts, the RCMP is sharing the following tips:
- Park in a visible, well-lit area if a garage or driveway is unavailable.
- Use visible anti-theft devices, such as steering wheel locks, to deter thieves.
- Consider installing an automatic car starter to safely warm your vehicle.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended with the keys inside.
- Always lock your vehicle, even when parked in a driveway or garage.
- Avoid leaving valuables like wallets, purses, or spare keys visible in your vehicle.
- Most modern vehicles don’t require a long warm-up period; if warming up is necessary, stay with your vehicle.
