This morning, approximately 29 customers in a rural area east of Emerson, near Fredensthal along Highway 218, are experiencing a power outage.
Manitoba Hydro crews are actively working to identify and resolve the issue. The estimated time for power restoration is 10:00 a.m., though this could change depending on the complexity of the repairs.
Peter Chura, a spokesperson for Manitoba Hydro, provided an update on the situation, noting that crews are still investigating the cause.
A busy few days
Last Friday’s severe storm also contributed to widespread outages across the province. Chura explained that most of the disruptions were wind-related, with high winds damaging power lines or causing tree branches to fall.
“The challenging road conditions and poor visibility also made it harder for crews to reach affected areas and restore power,” he added.
'It's tough work'
Today, with temperatures plunging into extreme cold, Manitoba Hydro crews face additional challenges. Chura emphasized the precautions taken to ensure worker safety in such conditions.
“We have protocols for working in severe weather. Crews have a set number of hours they can work before being relieved, but most of the equipment remains the same," he says. "It’s tough work, and the cold adds to the exhaustion."
Despite these hurdles, Chura praised the dedication of Manitoba Hydro’s field teams.
“From blizzards with poor visibility to extreme temperatures, our crews are trained and equipped to handle it," he says. "It’s not easy, but their commitment ensures Manitobans have their power restored as quickly as possible.”
