Some topics during the Jan.16 Wolf Creek Public Schools (WCPS) Board of Trustees regular meeting included the Rimbey Elementary School and BGC lease agreement, literacy and numeracy intervention funding, and the dual credit program.   

Here are the meeting highlights:  

January 31 Stakeholder Summit  

The Board received an update on preparations for the January 31 Wolf Creek Public Schools’ Stakeholder Summit, which will host over 200 attendees, including students, parents, staff, administrators, and Board members. The agenda and focus questions will be shared with all confirmed participants in advance, ensuring a productive and collaborative day.  

Division-Wide Vaping Awareness Campaign  

The Board received an update on the development of a division-wide vaping awareness campaign. In addition, École Secondaire Lacombe Composite High School has installed vaping detectors in select washrooms, and communication has been sent to the school community. The Division will monitor the successes and challenges of this initiative at the school level to inform potential broader implementation across all schools.  

New School Social Worker Program Lead  

The Board received a report welcoming Candice Dickson as the new School Social Worker Program Lead. Previously serving as the School Social Worker at The BRICK, Candice will now oversee the School Social Worker team and serve as a liaison with key community partners, including Child and Family Services, Family Resource Networks, and community mental health resources. Additional responsibilities from the previous Director role have been redistributed within the Education Services Team.  

Literacy and Numeracy Intervention Funding for Grades 1-3  

The Board received a report on the $90,000 in funding allocated to Wolf Creek Public Schools to support Literacy and Numeracy Intervention for Grades 1-3. This funding, based on fall literacy and numeracy screeners from Alberta Education, equates to approximately $124 per student identified as needing additional support. The January assessment window, currently open until the end of the month, will assess all K-3 students, with additional intervention funding for Kindergarten students expected by March. A final assessment for flagged students will take place in May 2025, and the program will expand to include Grades 4 and 5 in the fall of 2026.  

Lease Agreement with BGC Wolf Creek at Rimbey Elementary School  

The Board directed the Superintendent to enter into a lease agreement with BGC Wolf Creek at Rimbey Elementary School. The lease will be for 2.5 years, commencing February 1, 2025. This agreement reflects the Board’s commitment to fostering community partnerships within school facilities.  

WCPS Dual Credit and Collegiate Program Highlights  

The Board received a report on the continued growth and success of the Wolf Creek Public Schools Dual Credit and Collegiate Program. Highlights include: Wolf Creek students continue to excel in their dual credit classes, with average grades in the 80s and several students achieving top marks in their respective classes. Wolf Creek Public Schools ranks #1 in the province for per capita participation in dual credit programs and #4 overall for total student participation, including the four largest metro school boards.
