Once again, Olivia and Noah were the top baby names in Alberta in 2024. 

Olivia has held the top spot for 12 consecutive years. The next longest-reigning name was Ethan, at nine consecutive years between 2001 and 2009, followed by Liam, with seven years from 2010 to 2016. 

2024 marks Noah’s sixth year in a row in the top spot for boys.

Charlotte, Amelia, Sophia, Emma and Ava were among the top five most popular names for baby girls, while Oliver, Liam, Theodore and Henry rounded out the top five choices for baby boys.

Notable changes to the list:

  • Levi made its way back to the top ten list for the first time since 2020, coming in at number nine.
  • Ethan also returned to the top 10 list for boys after a short break in 2022 and 2023.
  • Harper is back on the top ten list for girls after a brief hiatus in 2023.
  • Sophie has cracked the top 10 list for the first time since 2011.
  • Newcomer Ellie shakes up the top 10 list for girls for the first time.

Historically, girls’ names that held the No. 1 spot for the longest consecutive time period include:

  • Olivia: 12 years (2013-2024)
  • Jessica: six years (1990-1995)
  • Emily: five years (1998-2002)

Historically, boys’ names that held the No. 1 spot for the longest consecutive time period include:

  • Ethan: nine years (2001-2009)
  • Liam: seven years (2010-2016)
  • Noah: six years (2019-2024)
  • Matthew: five years (1995-1999)

More than 50,000 births were registered in Alberta in 2024. Parents have up to one year to register their child’s birth.
