Red Deer's Dennis Moffat received a big surprise on Jan. 15 when he was awarded with the King Charles III Coronation Medal by Red Deer-South MLA Jason Stephan.

"Dennis was a great high school teacher in Red Deer who went the extra mile coaching football and basketball," stated Stephan in a Facebook post. "He was a City of Red Deer Councilor for 27 years. He was the founder/operator of the The Market at Red Deer which continues to operate after more than 50 years!  Most important Dennis has a wonderful family, married for 67 years to his devoted wife Barb. Congratulations Dennis!"

The Coronation Medal was created to mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, which took place on May 6, 2023. It is the first Canadian commemorative medal to mark a coronation.

The medal will be awarded to 30,000 deserving individuals.

To be eligible for this honour, a person must have made a significant contribution to Canada or to a particular province, territory, region of, or community in, Canada, or attained an outstanding achievement abroad that brings credit to Canada.
