This past weekend, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens Futsal teams had exciting starts to their seasons. The RDP Basketball teams were downed by the St. Mary’s University Lightning. The Queens Hockey team blanked the NAIT Ooks. The Kings Hockey team split its weekend series with the Ooks. The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings, Queens and Mixed Curling teams played well at the Winter Regional, advancing to the ACAC Curling Championships.

Here is a summary of the recent results:

Futsal

RDP Queens vs Olds College | Main Gym | Friday, January 17

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Futsal team defeated the Olds College Broncos 3-1 at home. Red Deer’s McKenna Leslie scored twice for the Queens. Payton Erick added a goal.

“The fan support was great and really amped up the girls,” said Mahziar Peyrow, RDP Queens Futsal Head Coach.

Kings vs Broncos | Main Gym | Friday, January 17

The RDP Kings Futsal team was edged 2-1 by the Olds College Broncos. Red Deer’s Ajdin Sarcevic, the North Star Sports Kings Player of the Game, scored the Polytechnic’s lone goal on a penalty kick.

Next, the Kings will participate in the first South Regional hosted by Lethbridge Polytechnic from February 1- 2, 2025

Basketball

RDP Queens at St. Mary’s University | Friday, January 17

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team was dropped 74-52 by the St. Mary’s University Lightning in Calgary. Sherwood Park’s Salome Nuako scored 14 points for the Polytechnic.

Queens vs Lightning | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, January 18

The fourth place RDP Queens (8-5) were downed 85-66 by the second seed Lightning (10-3). Rachel Harvey led the Queens with 23 points.

RDP Kings at St. Mary’s University | Friday, January 17

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball team was defeated by four points (124-120) by the St. Mary’s University Lightning. Deandre Rowe sank 33 points for the Kings.

Kings vs Lightning | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, January 18

The sixth seed Red Deer Polytechnic Kings (5-8) were shaded 112-109 by the second place Lightning (11-2) in overtime. Samuel Idemudia, a first-year guard from Leduc, scored 23 points for RDP.

Hockey

Queens vs Ooks | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, January 17

The third seed RDP Queens Hockey team (10-5) earned a 3-0 shutout over the second place NAIT Ooks (13-4).

Arilyn Toews (Bachelor of Science in Nursing), Alli Soyko (Bachelor of Education Elementary) and Hayley Kolosky (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology) scored goals on the power play. Izzy Palumbo (Bachelor of Commerce) made 28 saves in the Queens’ net.

Kings at NAIT | Friday, January 17

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team was edged 4-3 by the NAIT Ooks in a shootout. Alex Bernauer, Tanner Sklaruk and Nolan Doell recorded goals for the Kings.

RDP Kings vs NAIT | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, January 18

The Kings (9W-5L-2 OTL) defeated the Ooks (7W-8L-1 OTL) at home. Both Holden Knights (Business Certificate) and Alex Bernauer (Business Diploma) scored two goals for RDP. Nathan DeGraves, a first-year Kings defender, added one goal. Kristian Lyon, Kings goaltender, turned aside 32 shots.

The RDP Kings rank third in the league. The Ooks are fourth.

RDP Curling | Winter Regional | Thistle Curling Club | January 17-20

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings, Queens and Mixed Curling teams continued their impactful play at the ACAC Winter Regional held at Thistle Curling Club in Edmonton.

At the Winter Regional, the RDP Kings finished with a 3-1 record. They defeated the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings (8-2), NAIT Ooks (10-3) and Lakeland College Rustlers (8-3). The Kings dropped a 5-3 decision to the SAIT Ooks.

With a combined record of 6-2 from the Fall and Winter Regionals, the RDP Kings placed second in the Men’s Curling Division, qualifying for the ACAC Curling Championships held in Red Deer.

The Queens went 3-2 at the Winter Regional. They beat NAIT 9-1, Lakeland College 12-1 and U of A Augustana 11-2. The RDP Queens lost to SAIT 6-4 and Concordia University 6-1.

After achieving an overall record of 8-2, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens tied for first in the Women’s Division and advanced to the ACAC Championships.

The RDP Mixed Curling team defeated Portage College 11-0 and Concordia University 6-2 at the Winter Regional. They lost to SAIT 5-3 and Lakeland College 8-5, finishing 2-2 during the weekend. The Red Deer Polytechnic Mixed Curling team (5-3) finished second overall after both regionals, qualifying for the ACAC Curling Championships.

The top four squads in each division will compete at the ACAC Curling Championships hosted by RDP at the Pidherney Centre from February 7-9, 2025.
