A 31-year-old man from Sweetgrass First Nation has been arrested and charged with three counts of second-degree murder in connection with a triple homicide in Lloydminster last year.

Nakota Rayne Pooyak was taken into custody on Saturday by the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit and was scheduled to appear in Saskatchewan Provincial Court in Lloydminster on Monday. The charges relate to the deaths of Brent Peters, 66, Matthew Peters, 32, and Brennan Peters, 34, who were discovered at a residence near 50th Street and 47th Avenue on September 11, 2024.

The bodies were found by Lloydminster RCMP officers conducting a wellness check. Autopsies later confirmed that all three victims died from gunshot wounds.

At the time of the incident, RCMP officials described the killings as a "targeted, isolated incident." 

The murders marked a significant and alarming event for the Lloydminster community. "This is the first time I've seen a crime of this magnitude in Lloydminster," Nicholl added.
